The fact that this event will be held on the campus of my alma mater is really significant because it represents a sea change in how Kamehameha perceives and hopefully teaches its students about our history.
When we attended Kamehameha the school did little more than acknowledge that the “overthrow” (really a coup d’etat) occurred and that it was “illegal”. it stopped short of providing details of the events leading up to and following the “overthrow” and it never addressed the possibility of the restoration of the Kingdom of Hawai’i.
granted, we know far more now about the events surrounding the “overthrow” as they transpired and the “confidential” conspiratorial activities between Lorrin Thurston’s Committee of Safety and the US government.
We now know, thanks mainly to the scholarly research of the graduate studies candidates of the UH’s Hawai’inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the thoroughly evidenced details of both the overt and covert activities which led to the 1893 “overthrow and the subsequent failed attempts to legally annex the Kingdom of Hawai’i.
I sincerely hope that Kamehameha has amended its historical curricula to reflect the true history of Hawai’i and that it teaches its students that Hawai’i remains a peaceful, neutral, sovereign and independent kingdom and nation which has NEVER been a part of the US and is only temporarily unlawfully occupied by the US government and its military forces.
Mahalo, I have been waiting for a long time for the Acting Gov’t to implement the recommendation of the Tribunal in the Larsen case to go to fact finding. Fact finding is not restricted by the indispensible third party rule which requires the U.S. to be part of the proceedings. Here we go again, hana hou, Larsen vs. Hawaiian Kingdom 2.0.
It’s awesome to know Keanu will be speaking at his alma mater. I hope my daughter will attend this as she currently a student there. I’ve been asking my daughter what she’s been learning about Hawaiian history at Kamehameha. She tells me that they don’t have Hawaiian history til senior year. I’ll be waiting for an event to happen on Maui so I can attend. Thank you Keanu and all that has brought to light the true history.
True Hawaiian Kingdom History needs to be taught at every school…… In Germany they teach there children about how Germany was when Hitler was in Power and how the Nazi’s treated the Jewish People or anyone caught helping a Jewish person…… In order for anyone or Country can start to heal you have to admit what happen was wrong and make things right and Honor those you have wronged. So the United States of America needs to make things Right in Hawaii……The Hawaiian Kingdom still !!!!
Our Hawaiian history should be taught in our traditional cultural manner, through chanting oli starting with the kumulipo and including mo’olelo and open discussion. our traditional method of teaching is experiential and anecdotal, based on real life experience that is relevant to kudu and opio.
we must also IMMEDIATELY stop lying to our opio by telling them that Hawai’i os a part of the US and that we are all US citizens. In spite of the voluminous evidence we now possess which that Hawai’i has NEVER been part of the US, that we are all subjects of the Hawaiian Kingdom and citizens of ka lahui o Hawai’i yet our schools are still lying to our Kelli. This must stop now. It is hoped that Kamehameha Schools can lead the way in this process by correcting its curricula and course studies TODAY !
to KSBE: There is no need for lengthy and expensive studies. We KNOW the truth, start teaching our keiki the truths about Hawai’i TODAY ! its the very least you can do to begin to correct 130 years of LIES about Hawai’i and Hawaiians !
