{"id":1685,"date":"2014-05-14T02:34:48","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T02:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/?p=1685"},"modified":"2014-05-14T02:34:48","modified_gmt":"2014-05-14T02:34:48","slug":"maui-now-com-oha-to-host-two-maui-meetings-amid-nation-building-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/maui-now-com-oha-to-host-two-maui-meetings-amid-nation-building-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Maui Now.com: OHA to Host Two Maui Meetings Amid Nation Building Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maui Now.com reports &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/mauinow.com\/2014\/05\/13\/oha-to-host-two-maui-meetings-amid-nation-building-concerns\/\">OHA to Host Two Maui Meetings Amid Nation Building Concerns<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=1686\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1686\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1686\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Maui-Now-Photo-1.png\" alt=\"Maui Now Photo 1\" width=\"244\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Maui-Now-Photo-1.png 244w, https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Maui-Now-Photo-1-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a>Two meetings are planned on Maui following public concerns raised over a letter sent from the top executive at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to the US Department of State, seeking an\u00a0opinion on the legal status of Hawai\u2018i under international law.<\/p>\n<p>Kamana\u2018opono Crabbe, Ka Pouhana and CEO at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs submitted the\u00a0formal request to US Secretary of State John Kerry, \u201cas part of the organization\u02bbs broader effort to facilitate a Hawaiian nation-building process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crabbe explained\u00a0in a press release statement that the action was prompted by a\u00a0presentation and panel discussion\u00a0last month\u00a0that featured former Hawai\u2018i Governor John Waihe\u2018e, III, Chairman of the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission, senior Law Professor Williamson Chang, and Dr. Keanu Sai, a political scientist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe presentations of Professor Chang and Dr. Sai provided a legal analysis of the current status of Hawai\u2018i that appeared to undermine the legal basis of the Roll Commission, and, as alleged in the panel discussions, the possibility of criminal liability under international law,\u201d Crabbe said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=1687\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1687\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1687\" src=\"https:\/\/hawaiiankingdom.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Maui-Now-Photo-2.png\" alt=\"Maui Now Photo 2\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>Crabbe continued saying, \u201cThese matters have raised grave concerns with regard to not only the Native Hawaiian community we serve, but also to the vicarious liability of myself, staff and Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and members of the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission. The community we serve, the Trustees, and many of my staff members, to include myself, and the members of the Roll Commission are Native Hawaiians, who are direct descendants of Hawaiian subjects of the Hawaiian Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a press conference held on Monday, Crabbe said, \u201cI continue to believe my decision to send the letter was in the best interest of OHA and the beneficiaries we serve.
