Crabbe said that \u201cthe Hawaiian community needed to know that I was inquiring about the very matters they sought to bring forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">But OHA trustees quickly rescinded the letter, essentially scolding Crabbe by claiming he exceeded his powers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">But now members of the Hawaiian community are coming to Crabbe\u2019s defense with an online petition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">\u201cThere\u2019s been over 1,100 people that have signed on in a little over two days,\u201d said Dr. Kamana Beamer of the University of Hawaii. \u201cWe have about a thousand Hawaii (signees), as well as (those from) 19 other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Beamer supported Crabbe\u2019s decision to ask for legal clarity when it comes to Hawaiian independence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">\u201cWhat is the status of the Hawaiian kingdom under international law? We\u2019re not committed to any particular outcome per se, but we feel like we need to get these questions addressed so we can make informed decisions in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">All nine OHA trustees had originally signed a letter asking that Crabbe\u2019s inquiry to the State Department be rescinded, although trustee Dan Ahuna wanted\u00a0his signature be removed a day later, in support of Crabbe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">\u201cAll sides agree, Hawaiian independence, sovereignty, is a complex issue,\u201d said trustee Colette Machado via a teleconference call. \u201cThis is just the latest in discussions that have been going on for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">Crabbe\u2019s supporters say he did the right thing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #454545;\">\u201cWhen\u2019s the last time that you\u2019ve heard that the conversation is about doing the right thing, about the pono thing,\u201d said University of Hawaii student Donovan Preza. \u201cFor me, that\u2019s the takeaway from this experience.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KHON News reports &#8220;Embattled OHA official receives community support&#8220; Controversy continues to grow at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA).
